September 17 is designated as Constitution Day and Citizenship Day to commemorate the signing of the U.S. Constitution in Philadelphia on September 17, 1787.
π½ Background
The late Senator Robert C. Byrd, a former West Virginia Democrat and Congressβ unofficial Constitutional scholar, noted that American students often lack sufficient knowledge about the U.S. Constitution.
In December 2004, Senator Byrd proposed an amendment β passed by both the House and the Senate β requiring educational institutions that receive federal funds to hold an educational program about the U.S. Constitution each year on September 17 (or the nearest weekday if it falls on a weekend).
